Sundowns coaches Mokwena, Mngqithi Win PSL Awards

Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena have won the DStv Premiership Coach of the Month award for the third straight month, taking home the prize in December 2021.

The defending league champions’ co-coaches won the December award following an impressive run last month in which they guided Mamelodi Sundowns to four victories and two draws in seven matches. They suffered their first defeat of the season on the road against AmaZulu.

Royal AM, SuperSport United, and Baroka FC were all defeated, and the Brazilians’ impressive December run culminated with a thrashing of title rivals Orlando Pirates at home. They conceded seven goals while scoring 12 times to finish the month and year 14 points ahead of second-placed Pirates.

The co-coaches were lauded for their excellent squad rotation and ability to grind out results during a difficult stretch leading up to the mid-season break.

Marumo Gallants’ new coach Dan Masilela, who took over the club in December, gave Mngqithi and Mokwena a good fight during the judging session but came up short on votes. Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids of the Orlando Pirates were also recognized.

Andile Jali was named the DStv Premiership player of the Month in December after an outstanding performance for Sundowns.

The midfielder won the award ahead of teammate Peter Shalulile, Orlando Pirates’ Kwame Peprah, Chippa United’s Eva Nga, and Royal AM forward Victor Letsoalo.

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, a young Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, had his stunning left-foot curling goal against Maritzburg United rewarded by the fans, as it was voted the DStv Premiership Goal of the Month for December.

Mngqithi, Mokwena, Jali, and Ngcobo will each receive a trophy and R7 000 as part of their awards from league sponsors, DStv.
