Champions Inter Milan was defeated by Sassuolo in the Serie A title chase.
Simone Inzaghi headed into Sunday’s match knowing AC Milan – two points ahead of second-placed Salernitana – had only drew at Salernitana on Saturday.
They were surprised, though, when Giacomo Raspadori and Gianluca Scamacca put Sassuolo ahead.
Inter remained second despite missed chances by Milan Skriniar, Ivan Perisic, Edin Dzeko, and Lautaro Martinez.
Even when they did score, Stefan de Vrij’s effort was ruled out by VAR four minutes into extended time.
Inzaghi’s side still has a game in hand on AC Milan, and a victory would put them in first place.
However, this was a squandered opportunity, owing to their sluggish start and inability to convert 17 shots on goal.
It continues an alarming run of form for Inter, who were defeated at home by Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday and have won just one of their previous five Serie A matches.
In comparison, Sassuolo snapped a four-game league losing streak and moved up to 11th place.
Forward Domenico Berardi set up their opener and is currently the only player in Serie A with a double-digit goal and assist total this season.
