Nunez earns Liverpool much needed three points, Manchester United defeat Spurs

Darwin Nunez scored the only goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League on Wednesday, while Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 setback at Manchester United served as a reality check for the high-flying Spurs.

At Brentford, Chelsea’s streak of four consecutive league victories came to an end as they were held to a scoreless draw.

Impressive Newcastle United strengthened their position in the top six with a 1-0 home victory against struggling Everton.

Southampton escaped the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over south coast rivals Bournemouth, relieving some pressure on manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over champions Manchester City over the weekend appeared to be a boost for their stuttering season, but West Ham made them work extra hard.

In the end, they were grateful for summer signing Nunez’s first Anfield goal for the club, a stunning downward header from a Kostas Tsimikas cross in the 22nd minute.

Nunez also hit the post with a fierce strike, but West Ham might have easily salvaged a draw.

Alisson saved a penalty kick from Jarrod Bowen shortly before halftime, while Tomas Soucek and Said Benrahma both had excellent opportunities for the visitors in the second half.

Liverpool is now seventh with 16 points after 10 games, two points behind Newcastle and three points behind Manchester United.
