Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay scored late goals to secure the Netherlands’ ticket to the Qatar 2022 World Cup, as they defeated Norway 2-0 in Rotterdam on Tuesday.
Bergwijn, the evening’s star right-winger, hammered the ball into the roof of the goal after an assist from Arnaut Danjuma following an underwhelming 83 minutes in which both teams struggled to generate opportunities.
Bergwijn was again instrumental in the Dutch’s second goal a few minutes later, as he ran almost the whole length of the field before passing to Depay, who tucked the ball past a diving Orjan Nyland.
“They stuck to the game plan, they were a lot more compact,” Dutch coach Louis van Gaal told the NOS public broadcaster.
Van Gaal admitted he was “worried that things could go wrong”, Coming on the heels of his side’s shock 2-2 draw with Montenegro last weekend, in which they let a two-goal lead slip away in the closing ten minutes.
“But this evening we kept the match under control,” he added.
