SuperSport United beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night, their first match without coach Kaitano Tembo.
Amakhosi welcomed back Khama Billiat in place of Keagan Dolly, while SuperSport welcomed back Thamsanqa Gabuza after his suspension.
The rain began early in the first half and lasted much of the game, making things difficult for the players.
Siyabonga Ngezana missed an early header opportunity after a corner ball into the area.
Brandon Peterson denied Thapelo Maseko, while Jesse Donn was a headache for the Chiefs defence, probing with sharp balls into dangerous positions.
Late in the first half, Billiat forced a stop from Ronwen Williams, and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo almost scored from the rebound.
While Chiefs had the ball in the net on the stroke of half-time, the offside flag interfered, and SuperSport could have seized the lead via Gabuza, who inexplicably missed the goal.
Just before the hour mark, Billiat fired in a fantastic corner, only for Cole Alexander to make a mess of his attempted effort.
On 68 minutes, Keenan Phillips fired a precise left-footed ball into the box for Gabuza, who made up for his earlier mistake with a clever finish.
No matter how hard Chiefs tried, they couldn’t beat United goalie Willie Williams and took all three points.
