Champions League: Manchester City Thrash Sporting Lisbon 5-1

Manchester City effectively advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a win over Sporting Lisbon in the last-16 first leg.

City, as they have done for much of the season, put on a magnificent show to secure a resounding victory over a resurgent Portuguese club.

With his side’s second and fourth goals, Bernardo Silva silenced the booing that accompanied every touch from him and the other three former Benfica players.

Riyad Mahrez scored again, this time from close range, after a lengthy delay to determine if Kevin de Bruyne had strayed offside in the build-up.

Phil Foden added to his impressive collection of cool, calm finishes in a bruising first half.

After the break, Silva had a hat-trick headed goal disallowed for offside before setting up Raheem Sterling to curl in a fifth.

In the Champions League play-off round in 2016-17, City won 5-0 against Steaua Bucharest, matching their best away win margin.

On Wednesday, March 16, Sporting will travel to Manchester for the second leg.
