Willian, a former Arsenal and Chelsea player, has left local side Corinthians after receiving death threats.
The 34-year-old winger joined Corinthians on a free transfer last summer, but his return has been anything but unpleasant for the winger, who has 70 caps for Brazil since his debut in 2011.
Willian announced on Friday that he will return to Europe and that he has cancelled his contract with the club.
“I did not come to Brazil to get threatened,” Willian told reporters for the Globo Esporte.
“Whenever Corinthians lost and if sometimes I was not doing well in the game, my family received threats, and curses on social media.
“My wife, my daughters, after a while (they) also started attacking my father, and my sister.”
Some supporters have lambasted Willian for his poor performance on the field, since Corinthians was ousted from two significant competitions in recent weeks, despite the team finishing second in the Brazilian league.
