Afcon Roundup: Cameroon, Burkina Faso Through

Cameroon 1-1 Cape Verde.

Cameroon’s hosts clinched the top spot in Group A of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-1 tie against Cape Verde.

After 39 minutes, the Indomitable Lions took the lead when captain Vincent Aboubakar scored his fifth goal of the tournament.

Cape Verde equalized eight minutes later with a stunning flicked goal by half-time substitute Garry Rodrigues.

Midway through the second half, Aboubakar should have won it but blazed over the bar with the goal gaping.

Cameroon, who have not lost in their capital since 1988, will remain in Yaounde for their last-16 clash against a third-placed side from Group C, D, or E on Monday, 24 January.

Cape Verde finished third in the group with four points, one point behind Burkina Faso on head-to-head record, and the Blue Sharks now await confirmation of their qualification as one of the four best third-placed sides.

Four points qualified aside for the last Nations Cup, exactly as it did for both the 2016 and 2020 European Championships.

Burkina Faso 1-1 Ethiopia

Burkina Faso earned a 1-1 draw against Ethiopia to finish second in Group A at the Africa Cup of Nations.

In the 25th minute, Cyrille Bayala lobbed goalkeeper Teklemariam Shanko to give the Stallions the lead.

Ethiopia captain Getaneh Kebede equalized seven minutes after half-time with a penalty kick after Steeve Yago was penalized for handball.

Burkina Faso will meet the Group C runners-up – either Morocco, Gabon, or Ghana – on Sunday’s last 16.

Both Burkina Faso and Cape Verde finished with four points in Group A, but the Stallions finished second on a head-to-head basis.
